nothing wrong with the original gloss, but I wrote this up 
without first checking whether it was already an entry - 
it's a little more detailed, and I think "hit" might be more 
adequate than "spank" (to me, this conjures up an image of 
the wife lying on somebody's lap)

the ceremony might be "archaic", but is the word itself not 
merely historic? (not sure though!)
