The advice from the AHD doesn't really concern us because it's about avoiding ambiguity when using numbers. We don't have to use numbers here. |

Not being American the AHD doesn't carry a lot of weight here. Also "12 midnight" sounds a bit clumsy to my BrE ear. If the original is to change can it be done simply by adding "12 AM"? There's no need for literal translations. |

Just "midnight" is not wrong, but "12 midnight" is a more literal translation (the gloss includes the number) and is also the
prescribed notation suggested by AH (over 12 AM). |
