I agree the Jim.
The advice from the AHD doesn't really concern us because it's about avoiding ambiguity when using numbers. We don't have to use numbers here.

Not being American the AHD doesn't carry a lot of weight here. Also "12 midnight" sounds a bit clumsy to my BrE ear. If the original is to change can it be done simply by adding "12 AM"? There's no need for literal translations.

Just "midnight" is not wrong, but "12 midnight" is a more literal translation (the gloss includes the number) and is also the 
prescribed notation suggested by AH (over 12 AM).
