i agree.  also, this isn't wasei.  sense 2 is the original from english.  sense 1 is japanese usage

Any reference? My impression was that the term was used for female hotel employees too. The Daijirin entry for ホテルマン doesn't mention gender, and Googling for it brings up plenty of pictures of female staff.
