there's a type of hanafuda local to Hokkaido that's called 北海花 (quite obscure, but mentioned in hanafuda literature).
There's a university in Sapporo called 北海学園大学 (and I don't think this is a reference to any northern sea)
a defunct newspaper called 北海タイムス
As a noun itself (i.e. outside of (n-)pref use) it's a little obscure, though. |
