I just noticed that each "0" is represented by a separate "飛んで" (as in GG5's second example) so, with the note, the original glosses were actually OK. |

My oops on the "lit". Yes, translating it is hard.

That [lit] sense tag is the new literary/formal tag. We only have a "literal" tag for glosses. I don't think we can use it here. Is it even possible to give a literal translation for 飛んで? It could be an imperative, or it could be part of 飛んでいる, 飛んでいった, etc. One reason I think that sense is unnecessary/misleading.

GG5's examples are misleading. When using 飛んで, the number is read out normally, not digit-by-digit. e.g. 1万飛んで20 is read "いちまん とんで にじゅう". The 飛んで isn't actually required to understand what number is being said.
According to the 知恵袋 link above, the original purpose of this was to make doing calculations on abacuses (from figures read aloud) easier.
It doesn't really translate in English. I went with "and" because "1万飛んで20" is similar to "10 thousand and twenty". |
