Sense 2 is essentially として ("as"/"in the capacity of") + も ("also"). These glosses should make the difference more obvious.

I find the difference between the senses hard to pin down, and looking through the 78 linked sentences (URL below) I can't see any I could clearly assign to sense 2. Perhaps this is why the JEs stick with one sense.
Maybe someone else can identify a sentence or so for sense 2?
