i find sense 1 a bit icky and unneeded, but i suppose it does actually help

At first I thought "no way" because it really only relates to one or two of the later and less common senses of the 11 we have for ところ. Also it's not in the usual dictionary references. Then I noticed Makino and Tsutsui's DAJG has a good 3-page entry on this very expression, where they say "in addition to the literal meaning, .... used metaphorically to explain where names, theories, .... originated."
I suspect it's worth having once the literal meaning is added.

Learned this in class today as something similar to ことから, but often used for historical facts. Not sure how to add that nuance to the gloss. Couldn't find it in the usual references.
