Comments: | I agree with Marcus. 厚い壁 is not an adjective. Eijiro have just used it to explain the meaning of the rather obscure English word "pachydermous". It doesn't make much sense to flip it around and say "厚い壁の" means "pachydermous". I think that in cases like this (simple A+B constructions where the literal meaning is very obvious), it's better to have a lit. gloss as part of the figurative sense. To me it looks odd having a separate sense for "thick wall". |

Refs: | Eijiro: 厚い壁 : thick wall 厚い壁の {形} : pachydermous 厚い壁のある {形} : pachydermous |

Comments: | Is that better? It really is a different sense, and since we've got the idiomatic meaning, it's appropriate the literal one is there. Pachydermous just means "thick-walled", but there's no matching noun - a pachyderm is an animal. |

Refs: | I'm not a fan of that 2nd sense. 厚い壁 is a noun phrase meaning "thick wall". I don't think it makes sense to say it's also an adjective meaning "having thick walls". |
