It's not at all part of the etymology of the term. It was added as a written form much later and is only used in a minute proportion of cases.

Why is 宜敷く marked as ateji? 敷く means "to spread out", and if 宜 means "best regards", that would make perfect sense.

Trimming (no need to say "ateji" twice.) Could be shorter.

Splitting out of 宜しく.
Nicopedia says "70's and 80's" but I can't find anything 
reliable to go on... and I think it has a very 80's/early 
90's feel to it (I could be wrong).
