I don't think the constituent parts are just kanji - 月並み is a compound of two words, 魂柱 isn't. Surely "leg-pulling" is just as 
idiomatic in usage as "pulling one's leg"?

Here the only "constituent parts" are the kanji. That doesn't make it idiomatic, any more than 魂柱 is.

Point taken. But the usage is idiomatic, though? "Not apparent from its constituent parts." Wouldn't it better to change the definition in 
the help file to "idiomatic usage"?

a single word cannot be an idiom.  the tag for [id] says it is defined as "idiomatic expression".  if an entry doesn't take [exp] then it can't take [id]

correct restriction is つきなみ; also applies to 月次 with that reading
