According the OED the word came to Europe via Portuguese and it's from the Guarani (Paraguayan language) "nana".
Bromeliad is sort-of Latin. It's from the Bromelius, the Latinized name of Olaf Bromel, the Swedish botanist.
I'll make the source for this "por"; I don't think we have a code for Guarani.
