Doesn't solely refer to cars.
Also, I think there are two senses here.

The first is "car model" (like Ford Focus). The second is "type of vehicle".

For an example of this second sense, here's the first sentence from jwiki's article on (motor) scooters:
"スクーターとはオートバイのうち、運転者の足元にステップ状のフロアを持ち、そこに足を乗せて運転する車種の総称である".
I also found this (from the link above):
"自動車保険で「車種」といえば、普通乗用車や軽四輪乗用車、原動機付自転車といった「車の種別」のことになる"
