I really can't see how "bumpy" fits with that sense. |

OK, I think but certainly shouldn't be the first gloss in the sense. |

Seems pretty good now. No reference has exactly the same coverage or sense split. |

1) In the quote 何ガタガタいってんのや (from the novel I'm reading) there is no hint in the context that the
complaint is loud or noisy. As I read it, the bosozoku guy is just expressing his irritation that there
is any opposition at all to his suggestion 木屋町にでも行こうかい.
2) Shogakukan translates がたがた言うな as simply "Stop grumbling!" -- and "grumbling" doesn't suggest a
loud volume.
3) 〔不平を言う様子〕がたがた言うな Stop grumbling [griping]! ---
http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/leaf/je2/12445/m0u/
4) Still, I suppose がたがた may refer to *loud* complaint sometimes, but my feeling is that it's not
really part of the meaning. |

うるさく is emphasized in many dictionary definitions and new century waei gives the translations: "make a loud complaint, complain noisily"
=
that said, there is more than one meaning for うるさい, and it could be a mistranslation |

I see ガタガタ (in the "bellyaching" sense) as being a figurative derivation from
the "rattling; clattering" sense. The speaker is demeaning the complainer by
comparing his words with a rattling sound -- something of no interest to him.
It's like in English "What are you rattling on about?" I think this is why
Sanseido uses the [俗] tag -- using ガタガタ is insulting. Maybe 俗 is not the
right tag, though. Maybe it should be something like "deprecatory" -- is there
an EDICT tag for that? I chose to submit "bellyaching" because it conveys this
sense of "insult", so maybe a tag is not necessary. Anyway, I don't think ガタガタ
is about loudness, as "noisily (complaining)" suggests. |

"noisily (complaining)" -- Does this perhaps emphasize the *noise* aspect too
much? Isn't がたがた really about *complaining*?
i.e. うるさい in the sense of "tiresome; persistent; nagging" rather than "noisy;
loud"
(I'm referring to the definition うるさく、不平などを言うようす)
Regarding the "sl"/"col" tag, I think you're probably right. |

Maybe it's better to say the 2nd sense is colloquial ("col")
