just realized the daijr examples are not for the volitional
form: 「ひく-ひかれず」 「泣く-泣けないありさまだ」
but the meaning seems to be the same?
I think "although one might wish otherwise" is a little
closer to "しようと思っても" than "although one wants to"

  Comments:
Would it be possible to leave in "although one wants to" as an alternative? GG5 says that it means "しようと思っても" which is not quite the same thing as "どうしても…することができない".
