Yes, I can't see a case for やみ here. Note that often an annotation will be found in text to give a meaning, but not necessarily to say it's an alternative reading or surface form. |

Gikun reading for the compound found in 文語訳(明治訳)舊約聖書
and wouldn't surprise me at all if やみ were creatively
written this way frequently in modern literature. See also
