This notational system was originally used in Okinawa for the sanshin accompaniment of songs and is nowadays also used for the melody of the voice part (as modern people learn new songs sometimes from notation instead of by ear). It is related to the traditional Chinese notation system 工尺譜 (gong1 che3 pu3) and probably also incorporates influences from Japanese notation systems. |
