Just leaving a note, but I'll leave it open in case anyone wants to push for a merge.
Wadoku merges this with the less-common 祭場. None of my references do, but Daijirin has as sense 1 "祭祀(さいし)を行う清浄な場所。祭場。", and Luminous has "(祭りの場) the site of a religious service." as a second gloss.
Google images show funerary sites exclusively for 斎場 and mostly Shinto sites for 祭場. I suspect modern usage has them well separated.
