I agree that it's a different sense, an abbreviation of メープルシロップ.
I came across the word in translating the following survey response:
{9}{10}・キャラメル・メープル{/10}{/9}
The context was that the survey respondent was asked to name some flavors or foods that a particular type of coffee drink would go well with.

By itself, that's not much evidence. But, in addition to the Wikipedia page, you can find things like

i'm not convinced that the wikipedia page is suggesting that all the things in that list are known simply as メープル. if this really does mean 'maple syrup' by itself, it should be a second sense, listed as an abbr. approving the reading change |
