Add “splitting into groups”, which GG5 notes.
Heard in line today – a man suggested to his companion that 
they 手分けする, meaning he’d stand in line (e.g., for beer), 
and she’d go stand in another line (for food etc.).
…so sense of “splitting up” seems pretty marked.
(I don’t know how “Scooby-doo” in Japanese translates “Let’s 
split up gang!” though…)
