Refs: | Shogakukan has two senses: 1) 広く行われる・知られるようにする That's when you spread - a tradition - a belief - information - an opinion etc., and to include "broaden" would be misleading in these cases, IMO. disseminate: ~を学問の分野に広める disseminate ~ into the academic world [ALC] . 2) 広げる This is not about spreading/propagating 知識を広める "to develop one's knowledge" [Genius WaEi example] There is also, from ALC, ~で見識を広める broaden one's view by . Shogakukan lists 広げる as sense #1, but it's clear from looking at the ALC example sentences that the "spread/propagate" sense is far more common. In fact, it's hard to find examples for "braoden" there, and that makes the current EDICT entry – with "broaden" at the head of the definition – somewhat misleading. |
