大辞林 states that this is synonymous with 鮭 (which can mean either “salmon generally” or “Chum salmon specifically”), while the more detailed page (that I’ve also attached) lists it as “the most common kind of salmon”, and it’s contrasted with 銀鮭 (coho) and 紅鮭 (sockeye).

I’m concluding (from the specificity of the name) that it refers *specifically* to Chum salmon.
