-sense 2 is 'mammal-like reptile' which is ~not~ synonymous with 'synapsid'. all mammals are synapsids but not all synapsids are mammals, and those that are not are called 'mammal-like reptiles' (a term that is no longer favoured because 'reptile' is now usually defined so as not to include the ancestors of mammals)
