All the JEs I consulted say "parent language" or "mother language", but then give examples such as "印欧祖語 Proto-Indo-European".
Obviously the same sense. |

This is a technical term in historical/comparative linguistics. As such it should definitely show up under the Linguistics dict. I'm not sure what "parent language" means to most people - perhaps this is just someone's poor attempt at a colloquial form of the ling. jargon (it's somewhat inaccurate and misleading in any case, and maybe should be removed). |
