Refs: | ごもん reading: 広辞苑 帝 only for emperor sense (not “gate”): * 大辞林 国語 lists 帝 in the head of the entry, but specifies that it is used for emperor on that definition line * 広辞苑 国語 only lists 帝 on that definition line in みかど * 広辞苑 漢和 definitions (only lists emperor) * 新解さん only lists emperor sense for entry |
|
Comments: | * Add reading ごもん (only for 御門) * Restrict 帝 to emperor sense (i.e., restrict gate sense to 御門) Etymology is straightforward: 御門 is 尊敬語 for 門 and this has two readings: ごもん and みかど. The latter word/reading came to be used to refer to the emperor, hence acquired (in *this sense*) the kanji 帝 “emperor”, but this kanji didn’t then point back at literal gates. (Sparked by seeing 乾御門 (referring to NW corner palace gate) – which seems pretty clearly to be いぬいごもん based on 乾門(いぬいもん) being in the dicts and on Google hits for reading.) |
