An associative (binary) law in algebra is an operator (say x) on objects whose 
results is independent of parenthesis placement, (a x b) x c = a x (b x c). 
Addition and multiplication of common numbers are associative. See also 
commutative, group law, ring structure (mathematics), field structure 
(mathematics).
