Interesting observation. Explains why I never did any coordinate geometry after leaving high school (in 1964), despite doing a degree in maths. |

The mathematical term is now more or less obsolete and was used in a
didactic sense mostly restricted to high-school: pupils start learning to
demonstrate geometrical properties (such as equality of two lengths) by
analyzing the position and configuration of figures and constructing a
discursing proof. But they are later introduced to plane and spatial
coordinates (introduced by René Descartes in 17th century) where these kinds
of properties can simply be verified by computation. The correct, more
general, professional term is analytical geometry 1801280・解析幾何学. |
