wikipedia calls it an 'elemental being'.
in the Chapter "The Wine Bug" of Wikipedia's non-Akutagawa reference (the book "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio"), upon which Akutagawa supposedly based his story, they specifically say:
"...the priest asked him if he often got drunk. Lin acknowledged that he did."
"...it was an insect about three inches in length..."
"...he explained ... it was the essence of wine, and on being stirred up in water would turn it into wine"
so it's a (make-believe) elemental being in the form of insect, and it doesn't keep you from getting drunk |

This is how the dictionary entry and Wiki explanation read to me. I can't see anything about stopping getting drunk. I wouldn't elevate Akutagawa's version to being the definition. |

The other version is from Wikipedia and it's also how it's presented in the Akutagawa story.
By the way, this is how a priest cures him from the bug: 劉が酒虫の退治を頼むと、僧は劉を縛り、顔の先に酒壺を置いた。しばらくすると劉は酒が飲みたくなってきたが、縛られているため動けずにいると、喉の奥から虫が飛び出し、酒壺に飛び込んだ。 |
