I would split them up entirely.
1) クロホシマンジュウダイ - spotted scat
2) グリーン・スキャット;グリーンスキャット - green scat
3) レッド・スキャット;レッドスキャット - red scat
4) スキャットファーガー - spotted scat
5) スポッテッドスキャット - spotted scat

I agree that a split here would be a Good Thing. I assume you want a 3-way split:

In my opinion it's simply best to keep apart entries that have entirely different etymologies. (This is a special case in which the meanings also happen to diverge, so yes, I would definitely split entirely with x-refs between them.) So for example I would also keep ストリークドスパインフット and ジャワラビットフィッシュ apart, even though they refer to the same animal. Reason being that the 'reading' acts as the 'headword', and therefore this fails the 2/3 rule. For entries like シモフリアイゴ and ホワイトスポッティドスパインフット, the problem is even more pronounced, because I really could write シモフリアイゴ as kanji if I wanted to. I haven't approved any of these "mixed" entries because I'm hoping Jim will comment on them and I'll get a sense of the way he wants it handled. |

I think that's a good idea Rene, because the term レッド・スキャット does not
really apply to all members of the species. Which reminds me of some fish I was
working on a month or two ago that had different names for different sub-
species and I didn't enter them because I wasn't sure how to handle it. BUT,
would it make any sense to use senses and scoped glosses? |

james, any thoughts on splitting these up? it would seem (to me) to make more sense to have an entry for, for example: "グリーン・スキャット,グリーンスキャット (See クロホシマンジュウダイ) green scat (green morph of the spotted scat, Scatophagus argus)" that is separate from another specialized entry for "red scat" and a generalized entry for "spotted scat". |
