Shogakukan has "a picture of an actual event" as part of its definition -- is that what the 
EDICT definition is intended to convey? That it's a drawing of a real object or event, drawn 
from life and not from the imagination? If so, I don't think it's clear from the wording.

#1 seems to be something like "describing actual scenes (in writing, drawings or paintings)"
Note that the example in sense #1, 「都会の風俗を―した小説」, is in the context of fiction (小説), whereas edict 
sense #3 says "as opposed to fiction".</upd_refs>
