<upd_detl>Nikkoku mentions "やまねずみ" at the end of its 山鼠/やまね entry, but that's the only contemporary reference I could find. 
GG5's entry has some heritage - I have a paper copy of GG1 and it has 山鼠/やまねずみ/woodchuck.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Was able to find some examples of both senses. I think we should tag this as rare. 山ねずみ almost always refers to the anime character.
I don't think it ever refers to a hamster.
I don't think 山鼠 should be hidden.</upd_detl>
