<upd_detl>https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB:HMS_Rodney_Aircraft.jpg is the poster image for 艦載機 on wikipedia
the word according to wikipedia refers to various seaplanes that were used for reconnaissance purposes on ships such as cruisers (not carriers!) as well as helicopters in modern times
the article suggests that 艦上機 is the word used for planes aboard carriers
so I think "ship-borne aircraft" was more correct</upd_detl>

GG5: (艦載機) a carrier(-based) (air)plane; 《米》a deck plane; 〈総称〉 carrier-based aircraft.
中辞典: a carrier-based[-borne] (air)plane [aircraft]; 《総称》 carrier-based[-borne] aircraft.
For 艦上機 GG5 simply cross-references to 艦載機.
WWW images for 艦載機 show plenty of aircraft carriers.</upd_refs>
