while carrying it e.g. a kid hugging a teddy bear.

抱っこ! is the same as Up! in English. Useful to include because "up" is not obvious</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>だく・だかれる has an ambiguity in it, it means both to carry (a baby) and to hug without carrying (even if だく by itself, outside of compounds, isn't frequently used with that 2nd meaning). In the case of 抱っこ, this ambiguity isn't really there, to my understanding. "Hug" does maybe to a small extent have the same ambiguity but I don't think including it adds much, but distracts some.

I can't speak as to what was happening in the quoted manga.

The typical [chn] word for "hug" is ギュー or ギュッ.</upd_detl>

all answers mention lifting of the ground "相手の体が地面から離れるように持ち上げる" "抱いて持ち上げる" "抱きかかえる。carry"
