<upd_detl>The popularity of the Tolkien series aside, seems to have decent hits on Twitter for the second usage.

(Many of the hits are also for ロボロ—a dude with 天 on his face wearing orange clothes—who is some Minecraft-related persona: https://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/%E2%97%8B%E2%97%8B%E3%81%AE%E4%B8%BB%E5%BD%B9%E3%81%AF%E6%88%91%E3%80%85%E3%81%A0%21#roboro)</upd_detl>
<upd_refs>Saw it used with the second meaning as a chapter title in the manga いぬやしき.

<upd_detl>I feel that the parenthetical, while completely valid, limits the definition a bit:— keeping in mind that "Hobbit" also refers to the race in the series (which is also how OED chooses to define the term in English). In fact, I've seen "ホビット族" as well as "ホビットたち". I think a general note that the term originates from Tolkien would suffice. But up to your discretion of course.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>japanese dictionaries have as the film series; japanese wikipedia has as the fictional race (in which case, it is lower case according to english dictionaries).

for our purposes, i think the film series belongs in enamdict and the "race" belongs in edict. if sense 2 is needed, i think it should be colloquial/slang at a minimum. possibly offensive (esp. if applied to dwarves, etc.)?

i will submit a new entry for the film series. the book name is different than the film series name</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>i'm fine with dumping sense 2; it's an obvious usage as in english. per wikipedia, sense 1 is worth keeping, i think. "hobbit" appears in english dictionaries, so for e-j purposes it can't hurt either</upd_detl>
