<upd_refs>I just noticed that sankoku mentions it as well. The 7th edition merges 碗 and 盌, but the 8th edition explains the differences in a note in its 椀 entry:
  陶磁器は「碗」、金属は「鋺」、小鉢は「盌」。</upd_refs>
