<upd_detl>The kokugo definitions are mostly all something like "walking all the way through a long and difficult trail", which doesn't seem to fit well with our current glosses.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>It shouldn't be tagged as both transitive and intransitive. It's one or the other depending on how you define transitivity in Japanese.
Given that this always takes を (unlike 歩く, for example), I think it's easier to make a case for vt.</upd_detl>
