<upd_detl>"Carriage" is a very common usage and one that anybody visiting or living in Japan is likely to encounter. The others you added were basically covered by "vehicle" in a way that I don't think "carriage" is.
I think it could be its own sense since it's essentially an abbreviation of 車両 which I don't think sense 1 is. Daijisen has a similar split.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Just noting that this meaning was already covered by "car". Apparently "carriage" isn't used (with this meaning) in AmE.
I don't think 車 would be used for any other type of carriage.</upd_detl>

When -車 refers to a vehicle, it refers to the entire vehicle , not one part of it. グリーン車 is never used to refer to a particular type of train, always jusg the car. 車 in words like 契約車 can refer to all kinds of vehicles (whether sedans or lorries) but certainly not train cars. And it seems 車 is only used as a counter for train cars, not for other vehicles which are normally -台(see daijs).</upd_detl>

We have 車 for single train carriages in 二等車, 喫煙車, etc.</upd_detl>
