<upd_detl>I welcome other (more succinct) gloss attempts. The previous ones seem to have missed the part about "attacking", which seems pretty crucial.

This is really 攻める + あぐねる, and 攻める is vt, so so is this. (examples in the wild are regularly を攻めあぐね...)

Initially it was not this, but the gloss for 攻めあぐむ which caught my eye for its incongruity with this entry.  Since あぐむ and あぐねる are basically synonymous, I wondered if there is actually a practical difference between 攻めあぐむ and 攻めあぐねる. (I am starting to think not). While 攻め倦ねる has an entry in sankoku, this entry is clearly more common (and far more heavily used in wikipedia).
