<upd_detl>But it is a 複合動詞 and we aren't so strict on A+B aspects with them. I think the meaning is a bit idiomatic as it doesn't cover the whole range of possible meanings of 取り/取る. I've experimented with attempting to generate translations for 複合動詞, and this one is hopeless.
BTW, it came in the top 2% on usage in the list of 複合動詞 I explored in a studt some years back. See: http://www.edrdg.org/~jwb/paperdir/jcv.pdf</upd_detl>

Our 取る entry has 17 senses. The number of senses that can be used with すぎる is definitely more than two.</upd_detl>
