<upd_detl>Usually plural in english in common use. Could make singular, but that would look odd.

This term is far more common-looking than in Japanese than [bot] or the previous glosses would suggest. Anyone growing tomatoes or vegetables at home might be familiar with this. I'm not sure [bot] is even required here.

There is some overlap with broccolini (thin broccoli shoots).わき芽型</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Some 脇芽 at least are also commonly called "suckers" in the case of tomatoes.

脇 may be doing double-duty here. With the meaning "side" it could be any lateral offshoot from the main stem. Given the "armpit", it rather plainly matches the definition of "sucker" which is a small offshoot that sprouts at the joint of a larger offshoot. (pictures make clear).

The is another term that wordreference as for "sucker", which is 吸枝. This actually seems like a rather uncommon translation by comparison.</upd_detl>
