This literally just looks completely wrong, I cannot find a single Japanese source that comes close to supporting it.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I lived opposite a temple in Tokyo for quite a while. The temple bell was very much in evidence at funerals.
My 1931 predecessor to GG5 doesn't include that gloss, so it was obviously added between then and 2003. I don't have a problem with the gloss.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I was just going to add on that the likely source of this was the chiming of temple bells for funerals/for the dead.

But this doesn't make the bells themselves funeral bells, any more than church bells at a Catholic church are funeral bells. It just feels like a very odd gloss to put here.

I'm getting that E->J is of secondary concern at best, but "funeral bell" -> "釣鐘" would be absurd. And in the J->E direction, surely you would have the context of a funeral at play. "We heard the ringing of the 釣鐘", "we heard the ringing of the funeral bells". I can see why this gloss might apply in some contexts, but I don't see why it's beneficial to have.

This feels like it would be more accurate as:
[expl] rung to announce the hour, for prayers, for funerals, etc.

(which is an [expl] I don't think anyone would ever add)</upd_detl>
<upd_refs>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_knell
A death knell is the ringing of a church bell immediately after a death to announce it...

===
But surely this doesn't turn "church bells" into "funeral bells"...</upd_refs>
