<upd_detl>This entry cannot be reached unless the search term is entered in full
width characters. This is a problem for the odd users like me who mostly
copy/paste search terms from Japanese publications on the internet where
full width characters seem rarely (never?) used.

Looking at reference (1) above, where a Japanese word is written in
alphabet the alphabet characters are treated as kanji. An alternative
approach would be to treat them as kana, and make an entry in the Readings
per reference (2).

Anyway, any attempt to put half-width characters in either kanji or
readings will produce a syntax error per reference (3).

A work-around is to put something in the Meanings field, which I think
will at least make the entry more readily available to a search. There is
only one other entry with the string "GW" in the meanings field.

I notice the same has already been done for OL and OB but it is not very
helpful in those cases as there are hundreds of entries returned for
searches on "OB" or "OL". I don't forsee any resurgence coming in usage of
full width characters. But use of alphabet for Japanese words will
probably increase which is a shame as I haven't even learned all the kanji
yet.</upd_detl>

word/phrase which contains kanji, special characters or letters from non-
Japanese scripts (e.g. MP3プレーヤー). The word/phrase should written in
full-width characters (e.g. it is not MP3プレーヤー)."

<upd_detl>But it's not an abbreviation; it's something referred to by its initials, just like HTML/エッチティーエムエル and IBM/アイビーエム. None of those have "abbr" tags.
Most of our entries with zenkaku alphabetics in the surface form have the regular alphabetics in the glosses as well as they're called that in English. This one is a bit of an exception as "GW" is not used in English. Strictly speaking it shouldn't be in the glosses but I feel it's harmless and useful.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I think we've decided that Japanese-made initialisms should get the abbr tag.
(though my actual preference would be to tag all initialisms as abbr)

Having "GW" as a gloss is useful for look-ups, but so would be including "KY" in the KY entry, because the exact same issue Jim described will come up there. ultimately it's a problem that I really don't think we should be handling on the gloss level.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree that "GW" shouldn't be a gloss. It's a clunky way of handling the issue.
See comments on 2718850 for discussion about abbr on acronyms/initialisms. Although I said an argument could be made for including it on Japanese-made acronyms, I'm not sure it's a good argument. For the sake of consistency it's probably best not to use abbr for any acronyms/initialisms. I note that daijr and daijs don't define "GW" as "ゴールデンウイークの略".</upd_detl>
