<upd_detl>In common speech the word "surgery" more commonly refers to the act itself than to the field (it can mean either).
The word "外科" refers to the field (分野,部門), but not to the act.
The single word "surgery" is ambiguous for beginners who don't yet thoroughly understand the kanji "科";
they may see the first and second definitions as being *contrasted* and think the first definition refers to the act.
Thus it is better to explicitly specify so as to clearly differentiate the word from 手術 (the act / "operation").
("Surgery" is built from Greek roots meaning "hand" + "work" just like 手術.)</upd_detl>
