<upd_detl>Neither the reading nor the "correct" kanji are inherently guessable.

More than that, I am about to add another expression for "to pursue a hobby" which is more common, but far less self-evident. I would prefer to not have one expression listed without the other.

Added 追究する as [sK] because while not on n-grams, it is on twitter.

Note: I rather like that 追求する、追及する and 追究する are independent entries, but there is evidently/obviously some amount of overlap with terms like this one.</upd_detl>

google 趣味を追求する "hobby", plenty of independent sources.

趣味を追求して	150	82.0%
趣味を追及して	33	18.0%
趣味を追いかけて	0	0.0% (another "pursue" guess, doesn't work...)
趣味を追究して	0	0.0%

趣味を追いかける	26	5.5% (or, barely works, but not optimal)
趣味を追求する	322	67.9%
趣味を追及する	126	26.6%
趣味を追究する	0	0.0%</upd_refs>

<upd_detl>Re: a+b
See: 趣味を極める

I agree this entry is a+b in isolation, but it is misleading for a Japanese learner to see 趣味を極める as the sole gloss for "pursue a hobby" in jmdict. And, I think the case for 趣味を極める is quite strong. (Also, as noted in n-grams, this is a preferable form over many other terms glossed "pursue", so it is not completely without value on its own).</upd_detl>
