A search for "中帽" "ちゅうぼう" (old reading) is all references to this dictionary entry.  Any evidence for ちゅうぼう in a 国語辞典? (I find nothing)

It appears that the "correct" definition is something like:
"military-style helmet made of polycarbonate, characteristics specified by the Japanese Ministry of Defense"

Not "just" a helmet, but a very specific kind of helmet.  Since I don't think that will be accepted, I flagged as [rare] instead. (seems rare enough outside of specific, 自衛隊 contexts)

Definitely does not appear to be limited in any way only to the "liner" of the helmet.  Japanese wikipedia does include: ヘルメット（ヘルメットライナー） which it romanizes as "Liner",but this looks to be misleading waseigo.  The entry is clear that it is the whole helmet.  In common parlance it appears that the whole 中帽 might even be abbreviated "ライナー". Note the first twitter reference, it is possible in some cases to wear a  中帽 under a larger, metal 外帽, so perhaps this is the origin of ライナー。 

In theory another sense could be added to the "ライナー" entry, "helmet", with a back-reference here, but I'm guessing that is excessive for such a niche-looking term.</upd_detl>

新旧ありますが、ライナーは『中帽』、てっぱちは『鉄帽』といい、ヘルメットの事を言います！余談ですが現在の８８式鉄帽の前は、中帽と鉄帽を合体させて被っていました😊

中帽の少し大きい鉄製のヘルメット（外帽）を被せて使うんです。ちなみに中帽は、なかぼう　と読みます。
