<upd_detl>Adverbial usage is most common.

Occasionally [adj-no] as in "思いのほかの好成績" (daijs example).

思いのほかに is reasonably common but I'm not sure what to do about the tags. I considered adding [adj-na] but 思いのほかな gets very few real hits.</upd_detl>
