<upd_detl>Daijs does split, but its 1 and 2 seem to mean much the same thing to me. OK so during the Edo period and earlier there were eras whose start didn't coincide with the reign of a new emperor, but I don't think that's super relevant here. 
We refer to 元号 as "imperial era" pretty consistently across plenty of entries here. If the concept needs to be explained/have examples, it would be better to just xref to the gengo entry.</upd_detl>
