<upd_detl>In Brazilian Portuguese, "colônia" (colony) can also mean, by extension, an immigrant community or that community's place of settlement. This seems to have spilled over on to the usage of Japanese by the nikkeijin as well.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I think if it's covered it has to be a new sense, as it's not the usual meaning of colony.
I think it's probably a back-translation of colônia, and not really appropriate here.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I tend to use Nikkey Shimbun because it's probably the foremost media source for the community, but by no means they are alone in usage of Japanese Brazilian terms. I've added evidence of usage from other sources.</upd_detl>
