According to this user on twitter, many "之 series" yoji are fair game in the yoji section of the kanken. Jitenon also has kanken 1 tags on many 之 yoji.

The notion that "之 = illegitimate yoji" continues to seem unfounded to me. Wikipedia's yoji article mentions differing schools of thought on this topic, but popular opinion is apparently in favor of their inclusion.
