<upd_detl>My understanding was that the two terms cleanly and completely divided the category of musical performances into two opposing subsets (solo vs multiple instrumentalists). I'm not so sure now. If the kokugo definitions are taken at face value, it sounds like the performance given by a solo musician playing an acoustic guitar and a harmonic simultaneously could be considered to be both 合奏 (二つ以上の楽器で) and 独奏 (一人で楽器を演奏する) simultaneously.

Maybe it'd be best to drop the reference after all.</upd_detl>
