<upd_detl>This word doesn't actually refer to the "eve" itself. It refers to the 催し held on the night before an event or holiday.

In the case of something like Christmas Eve, "eve" may be sufficient. However, in the case of something like the "pre-event" (rehearsal show) linked above as a reference, the emphasis is on the event itself and not the "eve" as a temporal concept.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>The JEs all just say "eve", and the kokugos say "event held the night before". I'll reverse the order but it's possibly two senses.</upd_detl>
